Mai Khao is the long, quiet beach north of the runway, and it is the one direction the airport bus does not go. That leaves three ways in, and the first question is not which company to book: many of the resorts along this stretch run their own airport pickup, and on a leg this short that usually settles it. If yours does not, the run is brief and straightforward — the only real variable is how far north along the beach your hotel actually sits.

Which one to pick

Your resort runs a pickup. Take it. It is the shortest path from the terminal to the room, and on this beach it is a common inclusion rather than a rarity.

Everyone else, at any hour. Pre-booked car. The run is short and the area is dark and empty at night, which makes a driver holding your name worth more than the fare difference.

Family with children and checked bags. Pre-booked car with seats requested, or the resort car if it has them.

Traveling light in daylight. A taxi taken on arrival. There is no bus here, and no walk worth attempting.

Resort pickups first

The properties along this beach exist because of the airport’s proximity as much as the sand, and most of them have worked out that guests want collecting. Some include it, some charge for it, and some run a fixed schedule rather than meeting flights. The one thing they have in common is that it is arranged by email before you fly, not at the desk on arrival.

Check the return leg at the same time. A pickup that meets arrivals does not always run at dawn for an early departure.

The pre-booked car

Fixed price, driver in arrivals, and a drop at the resort entrance. Give the property name: the resorts along this beach are separated by long stretches of nothing, and the difference between two of them is a real drive rather than a walk.

Taxi and ride-hailing

Available on arrival, and short enough that this is a low-stakes decision. Both apps cover the airport from a marked pickup point. As everywhere at this airport, the counters in the arrivals hall are not all the same product — worth recognizing even when the fare is small.

What to watch out for

No bus, and nothing to walk to. This is a stay-inside-the-resort beach. Plan for that or choose somewhere with a town behind it.

The length of the beach. Northern resorts are much further from the terminal than southern ones, and quotes given for “Mai Khao” may assume the wrong end.

The sea. Conditions here turn rough out of season and the beach is not always safe for swimming. Resort flags and warnings exist for a reason.

Evenings. Dining outside the resorts is limited, and getting to it means arranging transport.

Where next

Nai Yang is the beach immediately south of the airport, closer and with restaurants along the sand; Bang Tao is the first of the bigger resort areas down the west coast. If the only requirement is sleeping near the terminal, the hotels near the airport page covers that case directly.

Going back: Mai Khao to the airport

The same trip in reverse, booked the same way — worth arranging before your last morning rather than on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a bus from the airport to Mai Khao?
No. The west-coast line runs south from the airport and does not serve the beaches to the north, so the options here are a resort pickup, a booked car or a taxi on arrival. On a run this short that is less of a problem than it sounds.
Does my resort collect guests from the airport?
Many of the large properties along this beach do, either included or as a paid extra, precisely because they are so close. Ask before booking anything separately — on a leg this short a resort car is often the whole answer.
Which end of Mai Khao am I staying at?
It matters. The beach runs for a long way north from the airport and the resorts are spread along it with gaps between them, so the northern properties are a noticeably longer drive than the southern ones. Book to the resort name and address.
Can I swim at Mai Khao?
In calm conditions, yes, and it is the emptiest sand on the island. Out of season the surf and currents here are serious and the resorts post warnings — take those seriously rather than judging by how the sea looks from the sun lounger.
