This is a guide to Phuket International Airport and to the part of the trip that starts there: checking whether the flight is on time, getting off the island’s north tip to wherever you are staying, and not overpaying for either.

Checking a flight

Arrivals and departures run on a live feed. If you are meeting someone, watch the status rather than the scheduled time — and remember that landing and walking out are not the same moment.

Getting to your hotel

The transfers hub compares every destination from the airport: what each way in involves, which ones stop running at night, and what to expect at the counters in the arrivals hall.

The three legs most people are making: Patong, the busiest run down the west coast; Khao Lak, north over the bridge and off the island; and Phuket Town, the one destination with its own airport bus.

If you would rather sort out transport on the spot, the airport taxi page explains which counter sells what, because at this airport they are not the same thing.

Before and after you land

What happens after you land covers the sequence from the aircraft door to the taxi rank. Entry requirements covers the arrival card, which is filed before you fly rather than in the queue.

If the trip is still being planned, where to stay compares the areas by what the ride from the airport does to your first and last day — which is the part of that decision nobody else makes for you.

Flying out

Departures are the half of the trip people prepare for least. Check-in and bag drop close well ahead of the flight, and being near the airport does not shorten the queue at security. If there is a gap between check-out and the flight, the luggage storage page covers where the bags can go; the terminals page covers which building you need and why the two are not connected airside.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Phuket Airport to my hotel?
By pre-booked car, by taxi taken on arrival, by the west-coast bus, or by rental car — and which one suits you depends on the hour you land, the size of the group and where you are staying. Every destination on the island is compared route by route.
Is my flight on time?
The arrivals and departures boards on this site run on a live feed and refresh on their own. Watch the status rather than the scheduled time, particularly if you are meeting someone.
What should I sort out before I fly?
The arrival card, because it is filed online in the days before you land, and an International Driving Permit if you intend to drive anything — that one cannot be obtained once you have left home.
Which beach should I stay at?
It depends on how much of your first and last day you want to spend on the road, and on whether you want a street to walk down in the evening. The area guide compares them on exactly those terms.
