Karon is the long, wide beach between Patong and Kata, and the drive from the airport is the west-coast run with one hill at the end. All four ways in work here: a booked car, a taxi on arrival, ride-hailing, and the bus, which passes straight through. What decides how the arrival goes is not which one you pick, but whether the driver is taking you to an address or to a beach with a long road along it.

Which one to pick

Most arrivals, and anything after the bus has stopped. Pre-booked car. On a beach road this long the drop-off point is the whole question, and after dark it is the only option reliably available this far down the coast.

Family with children and checked bags. Pre-booked car, seats requested at booking.

One or two people traveling light, in daylight. The bus, if your hotel is near a stop on the strip.

Four adults, or a lot of luggage. Pre-booked car, priced per vehicle rather than per seat.

The pre-booked car

Price agreed before you fly, driver in arrivals with your name, and a door-to-door drop that ignores where the bus stops are. On a beach as spread out as Karon that last part is the actual product.

Give the hotel name and address at booking. “Karon” covers a strip long enough that two hotels with similar names can be a serious walk apart.

The bus

The west-coast line runs from the airport through Karon and on towards Kata and the south. Cheapest way there, luggage accepted, cards and cash both fine — and it leaves you on the main road.

That works well if you are staying on or near the beach road. It works badly if your hotel is up one of the side roads on the hillside, which several are. And like every stop on this line, it is only an option while the bus is still running.

Taxi and ride-hailing

Available whenever you land. For this distance you will normally be quoted a fixed price rather than the meter; Grab and Bolt work from the airport’s marked pickup point and put the number on screen before you accept. Either way, agree the destination as an address, not as a beach name.

What to watch out for

The strip is long. Karon’s beach road runs for a considerable stretch. The difference between the north and south ends matters for every decision here — transfer included.

The hill from Patong. If you are coming or going via Patong rather than the main road, that is the winding part.

Late-afternoon traffic. The west-coast road fills with returning beach traffic. It is the one predictable delay of the day.

Hillside hotels. Karon has several set above the road with a steep approach. Worth knowing before you plan to walk from a bus stop.

Where next

Kata is the next bay south and a slightly longer run; Patong is over the hill to the north. Every destination from the airport is compared on the transfers hub.

Going back: Karon to the airport

The same trip in reverse, booked the same way — worth arranging before your last morning rather than on it.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a bus from the airport to Karon?
Yes, the west-coast line runs through Karon on its way south. It is the cheapest way there by a wide margin and it takes luggage, but it runs on its own timetable and stops in the evening, so it only works for a flight that lands early enough.
Where exactly does the bus drop you in Karon?
On the main road through the resort strip, not at your hotel. Karon is spread along a long beach road, so the difference between the right stop and the wrong one is a walk of some distance with your bags. Check where your hotel sits along the strip before deciding.
Is Karon far from Patong?
It is the next bay south, over a hill. Close enough that people staying in Karon go to Patong for an evening and back, far enough that you do not hear it. That proximity is the main reason people choose Karon over both.
Do I need to book a car in advance for Karon?
For an evening arrival or a group with checked bags, yes — it is a long run and the options thin out after dark. For a daytime landing with light luggage, the bus or a taxi taken on arrival is enough.
